More about Jeremy …
After a successful career rowing at the World Championships and winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, Jeremy spent the next 15 years researching what helped him succeed: the power of belief. His research at the University of Oxford about how placebo effects can improve health, wellbeing, and overall happiness have changed how placebos are used in science and practice around the world.
To get where he is he had to overcome obstacles ranging being cut from the high school basketball team, conquering a rowing coach’s prejudice against small athletes (he is small for a rower), and convincing researchers at Oxford and the London School of Economics that placebo and mind-body research was worthwhile.
He now has done 15 years of research and has published almost 100 scholarly articles and a book. His writings have been published the British Medical Journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, The Lancet, as well as a textbook titled The Philosophy of Evidence-Based Medicine, which is at the forefront of a new sub-discipline, and Doctor You, Revealing the Science of Self-healing. His work has seen him collaborate with the United States Armed Forces, the National Institutes of Health in the U.S.A., the National Institutes of Health Research in the UK, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in Canada, and Harvard University. His scientific research has shown that placebos work as well as painkillers for mild depression, that empathy has similar benefits to blockbuster drugs for anxiety, and that positive messages can reduce pain. Besides the scientific research, he has won two professional Muay Thai fights in Thailand as a (crazy?) experiment with fear, got a black belt in Tai Kwon Do to see how flexible I could be, and done long fasts and silent meditation retreats to see how much I could focus.
Besides being passionate about his own life, he has always been dedicated to teaching and motivating other people to achieve their dreams. He has coached rowers in Canada, Brazil, and the UK, he has taught hundreds of students, and provided career coaching to top professionals in New York and London.
In his talks he combines his personal experience with his scientific knowledge. He has coached hundreds of athletes from diverse backgrounds, published almost 100 scholarly articles, two books, and has consulted with governments in the US, the UK, and the Netherlands, as well as the US Armed Forces. His experience also includes a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, two professional Muay Thai fights in Thailand, and a Yoga teaching qualification. He has also been involved with and raised thousands of dollars for foster children and the homeless.
